Art insurance giant Hiscox has released a report identifying selfies as a significant threat to humanity’s artistic heritage. In a time when wars and climate disasters routinely result in the destruction of historically important works of art, selfies may seem like a trivial concern. Hiscox, however, reports that viewers trying to take selfies with works of art have been responsible for untold millions of dollars in damage.

Typically, the scenario is that someone taking a selfie backs into an artwork, knocking it down or otherwise damaging it. Among the most high-profile incidents have been a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin obliterated by a selfie-taker in Washington’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and an incident in Los Angeles dubbed “selfie domino”, in which someone snapping a selfie knocked over a $200,000 line of sculpture plinths.

An incident in Milan in which a student hopped up into the lap of a public statue for a selfie, causing the 19^th century sculpture to shatter, helped lead to a law outlawing selfie sticks in that city.
