Artist, curator, writer and educator Elke Solomon has died. Solomon was one of the co-founders of Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics, an influential publication in the early days of the Feminist Art Movement. She was also a longstanding member of A.I.R. Gallery, a non-profit, self-funded, all-female gallery cooperative founded in 1972, which offered exhibitions to female artists in a time when the New York gallery world was almost exclusively male.

Solomon worked in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation and performance. All of her work drew attention to contemporary culture, often spotlighting the strange, the absurd, the bigoted, and the dehumanizing. She deployed crass humor as a way to disarm her audiences, such as filling her works with anti-semitic jokes, exposing the often thin line between tragedy and comedy. She died on 9 January 2024, after battling cancer.
